What Is Paint Protection Film For Cars?

October 5, 2022

If you have a new car or have had extensive paint correction done on your current vehicle, you should protect the paint before dust, dirt, grime, and the elements attack again.

With the abundance of paint sealants, car waxes, and ceramic coatings on the market today, this is relatively simple. What about swirls, rock chips, and scratches, though?

Without a protective film above the clear coat, it is impossible to avoid the gradual wear and blemishes on the car's paint.

Paint protection films, on the other hand, provide an excellent barrier against minor scratches, UV radiation, and the effects of the elements. Perhaps you're thinking about getting paint protection film for your car; this article will explain the benefits, types, and other pertinent information.

What is Paint Protection Film?

PPF is a relatively thick layer of a protective material (urethane) applied to the surface of a car's body panels to protect the factory paint from damage. It's commonly known as a "clear bra."

The paint protection film acts as a second skin for the exterior of your car, shielding it from blemishes such as dings, swirl marks, and scratches.

How Paint Protection Film Works

A typical car paint protection film is made up of many layers, each of which serves a different and distinct function. The bottom of the protection film has a release liner that protects and keeps the other layers clean until installation. It also has an acrylic adhesive layer that adheres the protection film to the body panels.

The actual work is done by the urethane layer, the thickest of the paint protection film layers. When rocks chip your paint, it cracks and chips away over time, and years of driving without automotive paint protection film will result in multiple flaws in your vehicle.

Once these blemishes appear, the paint job will be far from flawless. You can polish and touch up the affected areas, but the paint will only look good from a distance.

However, when you install paint protection film, the urethane layer flexes impacted, absorbing some of the impact force and dispersing the remainder to surrounding areas, thereby shielding the paint.

Types of Paint Protection Film

Of the various types available, the following are a few:

  • Clear mask
  • Car scratch protection film
  • Rock chip protection
  • Clear bra
  • Clear wrap

Benefits of Paint Protection Film

It protects your paint from Fading

Aside from snow and rain, prolonged exposure to sunlight can cause paint to fade. If the car gets uneven exposure, the color shades will be different, requiring you to repaint the entire vehicle.

Paint protection films prevent paint fading by blocking harmful UV rays and preventing the effects of other elements and bird droppings.

PPF Helps Maintain Resale Value

Maintaining the resale value of your car is critical, especially if you intend to sell it. Mileage and overall condition are important factors in determining the value of a car. However, a buyer's interest in further inspections may be determined by the condition of the vehicle's exterior.

Installing paint protection film on your car is an effective way to achieve a pristine exterior appearance. Though the installation of paint protection film may appear to be costly at first, the benefits far outweigh the costs.

Reduces the Need for Regular Washing

Your car will look flashy and adorable with a new and excellent paint job, and you'll want to keep it that way. Regular washing, on the other hand, is not the best way to keep that paint job looking good.

Paint protection films, such as PPF, reduce the need for constant washing by repelling grime, dust, and dirt picked up by the car as you drive.

Saving Money

Applying protection film to the surface of your car saves money over time. Depending on the severity of the damage, paint correction can be costly, and the cost of a new paint job can be prohibitively expensive.

You won't need to repaint your car after installing paint protection film because the clear bra protects the original paint from damage.

Paint Protection Films Vs. Ceramic Coating

Despite their similarities, ceramic coating and paint protection film is not the same thing and serve different functions. Ceramic coatings have thinner layers than paint protection films. Furthermore, PPF has self-healing properties, which ceramic coating does not have.

These characteristics enable the paint protection film to protect the paint job from the effects of chips, swirl marks, hard water drops, and bird droppings.

However, the ceramic coating has advantages, particularly in terms of the hydrophobic surface, it creates on the car's exterior. Despite the fact that some PPFs have a hydrophobic clear coat, they rarely perform well as ceramic coatings.

Though both protect the surface of your car from chemical damage and ultraviolet rays, paint protection film performs better.

Can Paint Protection Film Be Removed?

Yes, and the removal process is an easy one. However, once removed, you can't re-install the same protective film on the exact vehicle or another vehicle.

Can I Combine Paint Protection Film and Ceramic Coating?

It is possible to combine PPF and ceramic coating for the ultimate paint protection for your vehicle.

The protective film protects against scuffs, chips, scratches, and other mechanical damage, while the ceramic coating protects against heat, brake dust, tree sap, and other contaminants.

Since PPF tends to dull the clear coat's finish by some amount, the ceramic coating helps restore that iconic wet glossy finish, making your paint job much brighter and the protection film practically invisible.
